Story Behind The Art: Originating in West Central Persian village, Ferahan rugs developed as a distinct rug weaving tradition in the 19th century. It combined geometric influences from the surrounding tribes and villages with the more refined, curvilinear design, emblematic of the Persian city rugs. The result became a unique style whose uncompromising workmanship, robust construction and versatile color palette endured the travails of time and geography. Today, Ferahan rugs are essentially divided into two types-Ferahan and Ferahan Sarouk rugs. Ferahan rugs are characterized by an all-over or endless repeat pattern of Persian motifs like vase, herati, stars or palmettes. The designs of Ferahan Sarouks, on the other hand, are semi-floral, mostly in a medallion style with four corner medallion quadrants. The medallions can be highly ornamental large hexagon, diamond, or oval. Antique Ferahan rugs are also known for their wide spectrum of vegetable dyed colors, mellow to soft yet rich shades. One outstanding color is the depth of midnight blue shade they produce and use to counterpoint the other subtle colors in Ferahan color palette. These vegetable dyes color palette also produces the unique phenomenon of Abrash, the antique Persian rugs are famous for. Abrash, a variation within the color families owing to variations in dying process, makes for the drama and distinction of Persian rugs.
