The Boeing 727 was a successful airliner, particularly in the 1960s and 70s, for its ability to serve smaller airports and operate on short to medium-range routes. While it was eventually replaced by more modern aircraft due to noise and efficiency concerns, it remained in service for decades, primarily as a cargo and military aircraft.
Southwest Airlines briefly operated Boeing 727 aircraft in two separate periods: a single 727 leased from Braniff for a short time in 1979, and then a fleet of six leased from People Express from 1983 to 1985. These 727s were used to support Southwest's expansion and as a temporary solution while their 737-300s were being delivered.
