Despite common belief, black wolves are not their own species. Instead, they’re a melanistic variant of the gray wolf and are identical in every way except for the color of their coat. Black wolves are endemic anywhere gray wolves are, including Europe, Asia, and North America.

Because of their jet black coat, a color commonly associated with evil, black wolves are traditionally regarded as vicious, malevolent, and powerful.
