Chinchorro Colombian Indigenous XXXL

Fully appreciating the amount of work and dedication required to create a Wayúu chinchorro is often the privilege of the connoisseur. In some cases, the wait for a Wayúu chinchorro to order can exceed a year. These pieces are renowned for being among the widest hammocks in the world. Extraordinary dimensions: 5 meters long, 2.60 meters wide and 6 kilos. A true treasure of craftsmanship and patience.

The art of the hammock Wayúu1

Among the Wayúu , the hammock (Hamaca) and the Chinchorros (Wayúu hammock) are distinguished by the way in which the fabric is worked from the first stages of creation.

The Chinchorro, a Weaving Masterpiece

To make the body of the Wayúu hammock, the artisans forgo needles and interweave the threads by hand. Chinchorro is characterized by its elasticity, its airy weave, its soft-to-the-touch texture and exceptionally robust yarns. The fringes, for their part, are made separately using specific needles, each artisan adding their personal touch. These fringes are not only decorative, they also serve as a blanket, providing welcome warmth on cool nights.

An Art That Requires Time

Making a Chinchorro takes between 2 and 6 months, depending on the size and patterns chosen. Each piece is unique, making this Wayúu1 Hammock a one-of-a-kind work.

Transmission of Wayúu Traditions

The Wayúu are proud of their traditions, which they strive to pass on to future generations. From puberty, young girls participate in a traditional initiation rite of Wayúu culture. It is a spiritual journey that includes acquiring Wayúu know-how, including the patience needed to weave hammocks. For the Wayúu, a patient woman is a woman of importance. This is why these women can devote more than 4 months to weaving these hammocks, witnesses of their unique culture.
