The dolphin with its playful nature and obvious intelligence played an important part in Maori culture. They are seen as the bearers of good luck and protectors of those at sea. And like the whale, dolphin have also come to represent all that is good in a family as the young are protected, nurtured and guided by all of the group not just immediate parents, much like the traditional extended family in Maori culture.
