The idea and technique of weaving friendship bracelets was learned by the Mayan Indians from travelers that came to Guatemala in the 1960's. Travelers made friendship bands and gave them to good friends they made on their long journeys. Those traveling for a long time could have their wrists full of bracelets from friends all around the world.
