HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Supermarine Spitfire Tr.9 was a two-seat trainer variant developed from the combat-proven single-seat Spitfire, allowing pilots to receive advanced instruction in the handling of one of the most iconic fighters in aviation history. Built by converting late-war Mk.IX airframes, the Tr.9 retained the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 engine, giving trainees a true fighter’s performance while providing an additional cockpit for an instructor. This configuration made it an ideal advanced trainer for air forces transitioning pilots from basic flight school to high-performance frontline aircraft.
In 1951, the Irish Air Corps, or An tAerchór, received a small number of Supermarine Spitfire Tr.9 aircraft, including those assigned to B Flight at Baldonnel Aerodrome, Dublin. These Spitfires had originally served with the Royal Air Force before being refurbished for training duties. The Irish Air Corps had operated earlier marks of the Spitfire since 1947, acquired as part of post-war surplus sales, and the addition of the Tr.9 allowed for safer, more effective training for new fighter pilots. While the Republic of Ireland maintained a policy of neutrality during World War II and the Cold War, these aircraft ensured that the Irish Air Corps retained a cadre of highly skilled pilots capable of defending Irish airspace.
The Spitfire Tr.9 in Irish service did not see combat, but it played an important role in preserving the operational readiness of the Air Corps during a period of geopolitical tension. Its presence in Ireland’s inventory also reflected the country’s efforts to modernize and maintain a professional air defense capability despite limited resources. By the mid-1960s, the Irish Air Corps had retired the last of its Spitfires, replacing them with more modern jet trainers, but the Tr.9 remained a beloved symbol of Ireland’s post-war aviation heritage.
This 1:48 scale model reproduces the aircraft’s unique two-seat configuration, Irish roundels, and the distinctive markings of Baldonnel-based fighters in 1951. Perfect for collectors of classic warbirds and enthusiasts of Irish military history, this replica offers an authentic tribute to a rare and elegant variant of the legendary Spitfire.
