HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-8 was one of the most widely produced and heavily armed variants of the famed German fighter, entering service in 1944 as the Luftwaffe scrambled to counter the growing power of Allied air forces over Europe. Equipped with a BMW 801D-2 radial engine and outfitted with improved armor and firepower, including up to six 20mm cannons, the A-8 was designed for both air superiority and bomber interception missions. Its rugged design allowed it to absorb significant damage while still remaining a lethal opponent in combat.
Willi Unger, a 24-victory ace, flew "Yellow 17" with 12./Jagdgeschwader 3 “Udet,” a Luftwaffe unit tasked with defending the German homeland against relentless Allied bombing campaigns. By 1944, Germany was facing daily air raids from the U.S. Eighth Air Force formations, and pilots like Unger were at the forefront of desperate efforts to stem the tide. Operating primarily over central Germany, Unger’s missions often involved high-speed climbs to intercept B-17 and B-24 bomber streams, frequently accompanied by P-51 Mustangs. Despite the intense odds, Unger proved his skill by claiming multiple victories in dogfights that increasingly favored the Allies.
The Fw 190A-8 was often used in combination with heavily armored "Sturmböcke" assault variants to break up bomber formations at close range, a tactic that saw limited but fierce success. Unger’s aircraft, "Yellow 17," bore the characteristic markings of JG 3, including the unit's distinctive yellow tactical number and the “Udet” honor title, named after WWI ace Ernst Udet. As 1944 progressed, pilots like Unger found themselves vastly outnumbered, yet they continued to fly dangerous missions to protect Germany's airspace during the war's most intense aerial phase.
This 1:72 scale model features authentic Luftwaffe camouflage, accurate markings from JG 3 “Udet,” and finely reproduced cockpit and undercarriage details, this replica is a must-have for WWII aviation collectors and enthusiasts of late-war German fighter aircraft.
