HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Supermarine Walrus Mk.I was a British amphibious reconnaissance aircraft designed by R.J. Mitchell, the famed engineer behind the Supermarine Spitfire. First taking to the skies in 1933, the Walrus was a robust, biplane flying boat constructed primarily from metal—unusual for the time—and powered by a single Bristol Pegasus engine mounted in a pusher configuration above the wing. The aircraft featured folding wings for storage aboard ships and was designed to be catapult-launched from Royal Navy cruisers and battleships, making it ideal for naval reconnaissance and air-sea rescue operations.
During World War II, the Supermarine Walrus proved its versatility across multiple theaters of war. It served extensively in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific campaigns, performing reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and crucially, air-sea rescue missions. Walruses saved countless downed airmen during operations such as the Battle of the Atlantic and the North African Campaign. Their rugged construction and ability to operate from both sea and land allowed them to fly in harsh conditions, often under fire, to locate and retrieve Allied aircrew stranded at sea. The Walrus was also used by the Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal New Zealand Navy, further extending its global reach during the conflict.
Despite its ungainly appearance and slow speed, the Walrus was well-respected by its crews for its dependability and utility. It was affectionately nicknamed the “Shagbat” and remained in frontline service until the end of World War II, long after newer designs had emerged. Its contribution to saving lives and gathering critical intelligence made it a vital, if often overlooked, component of Allied maritime operations. Its longevity and effectiveness cemented its place in naval aviation history.
This 1:48 scale model is a beautifully detailed tribute to one of WWII's most unique and heroic aircraft. With intricately recreated struts, floats, and catapult fittings, this replica captures the rugged charm of the Walrus while showcasing the engineering ingenuity of its era. A must-have centerpiece for collectors of naval aviation or fans of historic seaplanes.
