Frequently asked questions
Does powder shampoo lather?
Yes — but lather isn't the goal. Lather comes from the small amount of SCI (a coconut-derived mild surfactant) we use, which produces a soft creamy foam, not the squeaky-clean stripping foam of sulfates. If you're used to harsh sulfates, the lather will feel different at first. Your scalp will thank you within two weeks.
Can I travel with powder shampoo?
Yes — it's TSA-friendly because it's not a liquid. Pop the jar in your carry-on, mix with water in the shower wherever you land. One jar lasts roughly 2 months for shoulder-length hair washing 3x a week, so it's also lighter than the 2-3 bottles you'd otherwise pack.
How long does one jar last?
For shoulder-length hair washing 3 times per week: 6-8 weeks. Longer or thicker hair: 4-6 weeks. The jar contains highly concentrated formula — you only need about a teaspoon mixed with water per wash. There's no water filler, so you're paying for actives, not for shipping water across an ocean.
Is powder shampoo safe for color-treated hair?
Yes. Sulfates are what strip color from treated hair. Our formula is sulfate-free and pH-balanced for the hair shaft, so color holds longer. Customers with balayage, highlights, and color gloss have reported color lasting noticeably longer between salon visits.
What if I have hard water?
I formulated this on Kaua'i, which has notoriously variable water — some homes here have soft rainwater catchment, others have hard well water. The ACV in the formula helps neutralize hard water minerals so they don't deposit on the hair shaft. Customers in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Dallas (some of the hardest tap water in the US) have reported it works well after a one-week adjustment period.
How is this different from dry shampoo?
Different category entirely. Dry shampoo is a between-wash powder that absorbs oil at the roots and then you brush out — you never rinse it. Powder shampoo is a real shampoo: you mix it with water in your hand, lather, scrub, and rinse like any normal shampoo. The "powder" describes how it ships, not how you use it.
Will it work for fine hair? Curly hair? Oily scalp?
Fine hair: yes — it doesn't weigh hair down because there are no silicones or heavy butters. Curly hair: yes — gentle enough for the cleansing-conditioning balance curls need. Oily scalp: especially yes — most "oily scalp" issues are actually scalp microbiome disruption from harsh shampoos. Our formula is made to support the microbiome, not strip it.
